This section outlines the steps required to digitize materials or colors accurately using DMIx SamplR. Follow these instructions to ensure high-quality scans and seamless integration into your workflow.
Preparation
- Ensure the SamplR unit is correctly positioned and powered.
- Confirm that the iPhone is securely connected and aligned with the SamplR Phone Adapter.
- Follow the guidelines in the Preparing Materials section.
- Ensure the material is clean, wrinkle-free, and free of dust.
- Launch the app on your iPhone and log in.
- Confirm that the scanner is connected and ready.
Capture
Placing the Sample
- Open the scanner visor and position your sample, ensuring it is fully within the scanning area.
- Use magnets to secure the material in place to prevent movement during scanning, if necessary.
- Align the material to ensure it is centered and oriented correctly within the scanner.
- Utilize the guideline option from the camera preview for easier material placement.
Adjusting Focus
- Tap on the area you would like to focus on within the camera preview. This will trigger the autofocus function of the camera.
- After tapping, a slider that allows for manual control of the focus will appear.
- If necessary, adjust the focus manually.
- The slider will disappear after 5 seconds.
Initiating the Scan
- Close the scanner visor completely to block external light interference.
- Choose a capture mode. DMIx SamplR currently supports three modes: Photo, Measure, Scan.
- Tap the capture button in the app to begin the scanning process.
- The scanning process will be visualized by a progress bar.
- If the “Behaviour Video” option is enabled, the user will be prompted to record a behavior video. Please follow the instructions on screen.
- Once the scan is completed and the capture view is visible on the iPhone display, you can directly proceed with a new scan.
- Processing and upload of your capture will automatically run in the background. You can see the status of your captures on the library page.
Capture Modes
DMIx SamplR offers three dedicated capture modes tailored to different needs—from quick visual documentation to color measurement and 3D material digitization. Choose the mode that best fits your use case:
Photo Mode
Photo Mode is our fast image acquisition mode for communicating the look and color of an asset or material, similar to a product shot. Choose from predefined light templates. Photo Mode captures a color-stable HDR image of the sample, ideal for visualizing its behavior under uniform lighting or sharp highlights.
Measure Mode
Measure Mode optimizes color accuracy by using only the scan field's center to ensure 45° measurement geometry. This mode suits reliable color communication of textured or multicolor samples, where consistent, standardized measurement is crucial.
Scan Mode
Scan Mode is a scanning mode that generates PBR texture sets of the material, ready to use in any 3D environment. It works best with flat samples and provides texture maps to accurately reproduce the material’s appearance in digital renderings. Provided texture maps are Diffuse Albedeo, Specular Albedo, Normal, Roughness, Displacement.
